Triumph Speed 400 with a 398cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, DOHC, 4-valve engine, USD forks, and a rear shocker.
The Speed 400 is Triumph's first attempt at the sub-500cc segment. Coming across as a polished product early on, the Speed 400 has a good competitive 398cc single and a chassis/suspension package that delivers sporty ride with a classic visual appeal.

What this motorcycle is?

The Speed 400 is one of the two motorcycles which was the first to be introduced on Triumph's new 400cc platform. The other is the Scrambler 400 X. The Speed 400 gets an all-new 398cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, DOHC, 4-valve engine which produces 40 PS of power at 8,000 RPM and 37.5 NM of torque at 6,500 RPM. Additionally, there's ride by wire throttle along with switchable traction control and dual-channel ABS. There's also an assist-slipper clutch.

This all-new platform further includes a steel-tube hybrid spine/perimeter frame and a bolt-on sub-frame. There are 43mm upside-down nonadjustable forks at the front and a rear monoshock attached directly to an aluminium swing-arm. The bike weighs 179 kg ready-to-ride with a 13-litre fuel tank.

The Speed 400 is entirely developed by Triumph and built by Bajaj in India along with the other 400cc motorcycles on this platform. This is Triumph's first small-capacity modern-retro set of motorcycles, just like the bigger Bonneville range.

Does the Speed 400 has any rivals?

Consider the Speed 400 (and Triumph's entire 400cc platform in general) as the mini Bonneville range. On that note, there are not many motorcycles that directly compete with the Speed 400 as of now. However, there are other Triumph motorcycles on the same platform that are worth considering, like the Scrambler 400 X, Scrambler 400 XC, Thruxton 400, and the Speed T4 (it is the Speed 400 with a less powerful 398cc engine and simpler right-side-up telescopic forks). Also, Royal Enfield's Guerrilla 450 is a close and worthy competitor.

Other motorcycles like the Royal Enfield Hunter 350 or the Honda CB350 RS are mechanically simpler with their air/oil-cooled engines, twin rear shocks, and front telescopic forks. They are more true to their retro appeal while the small Triumphs are more modern and offer sportier riding experience.
