What these motorcycles are?

The Scrambler 400 X and the Scrambler 400 XC are more or less same motorcycles with few visible differences - the X comes with alloy wheels (17-inch rear, 19-inch front) while the XC has tubeless spoked wheels with same specifications. The X has a naked front while the XC has a small windshield in solid finish (non-transparent). Other than these, both motorcycles have their dedicated colours and graphics as well.

The Scrambler 400 XC is a slightly more off-road-oriented version of the Scrambler 400 X with its tubeless spoked wheels. It also gets dedicated colours and graphics. Although, it still is best for only light off-roading.

The two motorcycles further share the same engine, chassis, and suspension. The seat is also the same two-piece style for the rider and the pillion along with the seat height of 835mm. As the two motorcycles are equipped with a larger 19-inch front wheel compared to the Speed 400 (comes with 17-inch wheels), this setup makes the two Scramblers a bit suitable for light off-roading, especially the Scrambler 400 XC with its spoked wheels.

Do the Scrambler 400 X and the Scrambler 400 XC have any rivals?

The two Scramblers don't really have any direct competition from other companies which is the same with all other 400cc Triumph models right now. In fact, the Scrambler 400 X and the XC can be considered each other's competitors! A competition that only benefits Triumph!

Once again, other motorcycles like the Honda CB350 RS is mechanilcally much simpler with its air/oil-cooled engine, twin rear shockers instead of a mono-shock and the traditional telescopic front forks. The CB350 RS is not really a direct threat to the two Triumphs.
